Art at Mad Pride

As we mentioned in our recent post about new work and next steps for the collective, Sarah’s work is up in the Architecture of Mad show today as part of Mad Pride in Toronto. Mad Pride is a week of celebrations and discussions around mental illness. The yearly event is meant to facilitate conversations about mental health issues and remove stigma for those with mental health conditions. Sarah qualified for the art show partly because of her obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The show was also juried. The sculptures she submitted to the show started as a way to cope with overwhelming anxiety (happily, they have evolved into something more fun and whimsical). As is evident in her portfolio, much of Sarah’s work comes from her interest in “madness”.

To our surprise and delight, we found out a few days ago that we were also accepted into the Mad Market. Today’s market was one of the best art shows we’ve participated in, based on factors as diverse as cost, company, sales, and atmosphere. Here are a few shots from the Mad Market and Architecture of Mad:

We even got a chance to hang out and chat with some vendors we know from other shows (some of whom will be at the Strange and Astounding Show in Oshawa with us in November). To make the day even better, while we were at the show we received a notification from Etsy that we had sold a piece (you can find us on Etsy here). We had a great time and hope that Mad Pride continues to grow over the years. We look forward to being part of it in the future and seeing how it evolves.

Scarborough Big Art Book Reception

A couple of us from Apple of my Odd Eye dropped by the Scarborough Big Art Book reception last Thursday to check out how the book turned out and to celebrate Sarah’s inclusion in the project. The book will be available soon online on the Scarborough Arts website. For now, here are some photos from the event:

We hope to see you at the next event we will be attending–The Quilliad’s Issue 3 Launch Party and Art Show, Saturday June 7 at Betty’s on King, upstairs in the party room at 240 King Street West, Toronto.

Apple of my Odd Eye’s Bizarre Adventures

Apple of my Odd Eye spent yesterday (Sunday, March 30) at the Bazaar of the Bizarre‘s Circus Sideshow 2014. Some highlights from the day included checking out the other stalls, taking candied nuts from strangers, sharing food and conversations with other vendors (including Victoria the goldsmith and the tall, mohawked woman in our photos–see below), and chatting with an adorable little girl in a balloon tutu complete with octopus tentacles (she even gave Sarah a free croissant–for vendors at an art show, a lot of the fun we had seems to have revolved around food . . .).

If you weren’t able to check out the bazaar this time around, we encourage you to drop by another time–it’s a great show (we have trouble not buying everything ourselves, and the company is great–so many fun people). If you were hoping to buy some art, you still can! We’ll be at several shows over the year. You can also find our art for sale at our Zazzle and Etsy stores (more Etsy listings will be up over the next few days).

Sarah’s Art at Hip 2B Square

Some of the Apple of my Odd Eye crew headed down to Goodfellas Gallery near Queen West and Dufferin in Toronto yesterday for the opening of the Queen West Art Crawl’s fundraiser show, Hip 2B Square. AOMOE artist Sarah had a piece up, and we were curious to see what other artists had offered the market. Check out our photos from the event:

As you can see, there were quite a few interesting pieces and a lot of variety.

If you’d like to see more Toronto art (and/or check out more Apple of my Odd Eye art), come to the Bazaar of the Bizarre: Circus Sideshow 2014 tomorrow (Sunday, March 30)!

Creatures Creating Gallery Show/Sarah’s Abstract Pieces Meet the Public

Creatures

Creatures

Last night I had the pleasure of attending Nice to Meet You, an art exhibit at the Creatures Creating gallery in which a number of my abstract pieces are showing. Devin was there too, both as support and to check out the space for possible Apple of my Odd Eye and Geek Collateral Media events in the future.

Here are some more photos of the event:

Creatures Creating is a fairly new gallery on Dundas West, a neighbourhood with lots of potential. I like Creatures because their hanging and commission fees are reasonable, the owner is friendly, and it really seems like they care about artists. Their openness to us doing events there is the cherry on top.

We’re looking forward to working with Creatures Creating more in the future and are excited about what is in store for us.

“Hey, We Here’s Good Art” Update

Sarah's Portfolio

Sarah’s Portfolio

Apple of my Odd Eye was at “Hey, We Here’s Good Art” at Betty’s bar in Toronto last night to support AOMOE artist Sarah Y. Varnam‘s inclusion in the pop-up art show. The show featured an array of artists’ portfolios, sketchbooks, zines, and video installations. We’ve assembled a photo gallery below:

We also brought The Quilliad, the literary journal that Sarah helps to edit, and Devin’s poetry book, Love and Longing.

It was a good night of good art, good food and drink, and good company. We look forward to organising events like it ourselves.
