The Quilliad Press is Kickstarting New Publications

Hey!

As some of you may already know, in addition to managing Apple of my Odd Eye, I am the editor-in-chief of The Quilliad, a biannual journal that publishes the work of emerging and established Canadian writers and artists. As part of our commitment to growth, The Quilliad is now being published through our new small press, The Quilliad Press. And we’re Kickstarting to try to get our next issue of The Quilliad plus our first line of chapbooks out into the world.

In addition to copies of The Quilliad, poetry on demand, our press’s forthcoming chapbooks, and other great rewards, The Quilliad Press’s rewards include chapbooks by me, Sarah Varnam, and fellow Apple of my Odd Eye Collective member Devin P.L. Edwards, as well as art prints by yours truly! Here are a few sample images:

To see the rest, visit The Quilliad Press’s Kickstarter project page at www.kickstarter.com/projects/1765917797/the-quilliad-press-and-issue-6.

Art at Blackbird Bistro

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to install a pile of art at Blackbird Bistro in Toronto, including these two recently revamped pieces:

My work will be exhibited in Blackbird for the month of September. All pieces on display are for sale (if something catches your eye, let me know at syvarnam@gmail.com). My apologies for the following cellphone gallery–I left my real camera at home. 😦

In related art news, my work, Devin’s, and Ashley’s will all be up in a Toronto Public Library branch in November. More details soon.

Old Art, New Inspiration

While packing to move (to a place where we’ll finally have a dedicated arts and crafts room set up!), I discovered a bunch of my old art pieces. I thought I’d share:

I also found a half-finished piece that I want to complete (once everything’s settled down, that is):

IMG_7518I’d been wondering where this piece ended up, so it was exciting to find it again. hopefully we’ll have a lot more news for everyone soon, once we’ve got out new space set up. We have at least one summer event to plan in partnership with The Quilliad.

As Equals Poetry Film Debut

Two of our artists, Sean G. Marjoram and Devin P.L. Edwards, recently created a fantastic poetry short film, As Equals, with the help of some talented local actors. The film debuted on the web this week on YouTube:

The film will also be screened at The Quilliad‘s fifth-issue launch party on May 9 at Betty’s on King.

3 Days Left to Support the Arts through The Quilliad’s Kickstarter

Hi, everyone!

logo roundThe Quilliad is pretty close to our hearts at Apple of my Odd Eye, since all of us have contributed to the publication at some time, and I myself am the editor-in-chief. The goal of The Quilliad is very similar to this collective’s aims, as the publication strives to make the amazing talent of Canada’s emerging and established writers and visual artists accessible, and to pay contributors for the privilege of publishing their work. The Quilliad‘s staff believe in respecting the creativity and hard work that go into writing, painting, and photography by compensating the writers and artists the publication works with. By supporting us through Kickstarter, you can help make the dreams of these talented people come true–and you can be rewarded for doing it! We have art prints, poetry on demand, pinback buttons, and, of course, copies of The Quilliad available as rewards for backers. Think of backing us through Kickstarter as preordering your copy, with a little extra on the side.

There are only three days left of The Quilliad‘s fifth-issue Kickstarter, and we hope you check it out.

Eden Bachelder’s Art in The Quilliad

Everyone at Apple of my Odd Eye is involved with The Quilliad somehow (I’m the editor-in-chief), and we love to see the talent of other Canadian artists within the journal’s pages. The fifth issue of The Quilliad will feature several of Eden’s pieces (as for which, that has yet to be decided). Eden’s style is very much in the spirit of what we try to do aesthetically–after all, we are trying to appeal to those with an “odd eye” for art!

Check out The Quilliad‘s artist profile on Eden if you’d like to see more of her work and learn more about her. The Quilliad is still looking for submissions of art and writing, and the Kickstarter for issue 5 is running until March 22, so there are a few ways to get involved if you are interested.

New Photos for Spring

While yearning for warmer weather, I happened to notice the wintery beauty of the remains of this year’s herb garden. Waste not, want not–I grabbed my camera and snapped some shots. These are the ones that turned out the best. Some feel hopeful, others melancholy, while the last, “Nightmare”, feels a bit menacing to me. While I was going for very specific focal points with the other images, this last one works for me precisely because of the indistinct threat it seems to hold (the background on the right looks a bit like a blurry wolf-monster to my eye).

If you like any of these images, you may wish to know that parts of this series are now available as backer rewards for The Quilliad‘s fifth issue Kickstarter. The Quilliad is a local, small press journal of art and literature that all of us at Apple of my Odd Eye are involved with in some way. Devin and Ashley have also supplied The Quilliad with some prints for Kickstarter.

The Bazaar of the Bizarre is Today!

Today is our last craft show of the year, and it’s a great one. Last year’s Frostbite edition of the Bazaar of the Bizarre was one of our first and most successful shows, and we’re looking forward to what today will bring. As anyone who’s perused our recent posts will know, our version of the holidays is a little Nightmare Before Christmas. Keeping with that theme, here’s another necklace from Sarah:

Skull and ribbon necklace

If you’re in Toronto and want to drop by, we’ll be at the Pia Bouman Ballet School (6 Noble Street in Toronto) from 11-8. The show is full of art, clothing, jewellery, books, and other crafts by local creators.
