The Quilliad Press is Kickstarting New Publications

Hey!

As some of you may already know, in addition to managing Apple of my Odd Eye, I am the editor-in-chief of The Quilliad, a biannual journal that publishes the work of emerging and established Canadian writers and artists. As part of our commitment to growth, The Quilliad is now being published through our new small press, The Quilliad Press. And we’re Kickstarting to try to get our next issue of The Quilliad plus our first line of chapbooks out into the world.

In addition to copies of The Quilliad, poetry on demand, our press’s forthcoming chapbooks, and other great rewards, The Quilliad Press’s rewards include chapbooks by me, Sarah Varnam, and fellow Apple of my Odd Eye Collective member Devin P.L. Edwards, as well as art prints by yours truly! Here are a few sample images:

3 Days Left to Support the Arts through The Quilliad’s Kickstarter

Hi, everyone!

logo roundThe Quilliad is pretty close to our hearts at Apple of my Odd Eye, since all of us have contributed to the publication at some time, and I myself am the editor-in-chief. The goal of The Quilliad is very similar to this collective’s aims, as the publication strives to make the amazing talent of Canada’s emerging and established writers and visual artists accessible, and to pay contributors for the privilege of publishing their work. The Quilliad‘s staff believe in respecting the creativity and hard work that go into writing, painting, and photography by compensating the writers and artists the publication works with. By supporting us through Kickstarter, you can help make the dreams of these talented people come true–and you can be rewarded for doing it! We have art prints, poetry on demand, pinback buttons, and, of course, copies of The Quilliad available as rewards for backers. Think of backing us through Kickstarter as preordering your copy, with a little extra on the side.

There are only three days left of The Quilliad‘s fifth-issue Kickstarter, and we hope you check it out.

A Creepy Evening Stroll

"Emergency" - Sarah Y. Varnam

“Emergency” – Sarah Y. Varnam

Devin and I went for a walk this evening and came across this TTC emergency exit. It immediately made me think of zombies and ghost stories. I hope you enjoy this creepy little photoshoot:

If you’re a fan of creepy art (and maybe also spooky and speculative writing), you might like The Quilliad‘s fourth issue. It’s the publication’s Halloween issue, and there will be thrills and chills in abundance, as well as some pieces that are just plain strange. We believe that literature and art can embrace the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres, and we want this issue to reflect that. The Kickstarter for this issue is still going for a few more days, and we’re still accepting submissions.

Check it out.

Everyday Apocalypse

I walked out onto our balcony on Sunday morning and was struck by the eeriness of what I saw:

Our garden has turned into a tangled, dripping mess, and I love it (though I miss eating fresh sweetpeas in the morning). I couldn’t resist capturing the faded tones contrasted with those bursts of colour. Fall is one of my favourite seasons largely because of Halloween, so I might just be seeing ghosts and apocalypse everywhere because of that.

We have some more spooky art that we’ll be sharing over the next little while in the spirit of the season. Until then, we hope you enjoy the pumpkin-flavoured everything that has invaded the retail world this month.

P.S. If you like apocalyptic, spooky, or fantastical art–or writing–check out The Quilliad, a little literary and arts publication with a Halloween theme for its upcoming issue.

We’re working on our fourth issue right now, which means both that our Kickstarter is up until the end of the month and our submission call is open until the 30th of September. We’ve got a bunch of cool and creepy rewards available for the Kickstarter and we’d love to see your work for our submission call.

Apple of my Odd Eye at TIAM with The Quilliad

A few of the Apple of my Odd Eye artists were at the Toronto Indie Arts Market over the weekend. In addition to the copies of The Quilliad that we were selling (Devin, Sean, and I are all involved with the publication), we also had some of our chapbooks and notecards there with us:

Notecards

The Quilliad and chapbooks--poetry and art.

The blue and red books are by fellow Quilliaders Jessica Bebenek and Steph Chaves. If you’re interested in either of those beautifully bound books, check out http://growandgrow.ca/ and http://www.jessicabebenek.com/. As for us, we’re still in the midst of applications for spring craft shows. We’ll also be at The Quilliad‘s launch in May (date still tbd).

For more photos from the event, visit The Quilliad’s website: http://thequilliad.wordpress.com/.

Cheers,
Sarah

Hello, everyone,

A publication near and dear to our hearts (Sarah is the editor-in-chief, and Devin and Sean have been contributors) is open for submissions of poetry, (short) short fiction/flash fiction, and visual art! See The Quilliad‘s submission page for details. There is also a Facebook event. Submissions are due March 31. Residents of Canada only. The Quilliad pays its contributors a small honorarium and a contributor copy. There is NO fee to submit.

The Quilliad has also started a Kickstarter for its third issue. With the money raised, we hope to print in colour, pay our contributors more, and pay our staff. If you love small presses and/or independent art projects, check it out.
